Hunan City University is a full-time undergraduate university sponsored by Hunan Provincial People's Government. Since 2020, the university has been transferred to the first batch of undergraduate admissions in Hunan Province. The university is located in Yiyang City of Hunan Province, the hometown of badminton in China, the hometown of bamboo in China, the hometown of dark tea in China, and the birthplace of Great Changes in a Mountain Village. The university has profound cultural heritage, beautiful natural environment and convenient transportation, and it only takes half an hour in a high-speed train to get to Changsha, the provincial capital.
The university was founded in 1970 as Yiyang Teachers College and in 1978 as Yiyang Basic University. In March 2002, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, Hunan Urban Construction College and Yiyang Teachers College were merged and upgraded to form Hunan City University. The university adheres to the motto of "taking both moral and academic courses and unifying knowledge and practice" and strives to run a university that is satisfactory to the people. In 2012, it was awarded the title of "National University with Typical Experience in Graduates' Employment", and in 2014 it became the "Pilot Unit of Informatization Construction of the Ministry of Education". In 2018, it passed the examination and evaluation of undergraduate teaching of the Ministry of Education, ranking among the "High-level Application-Oriented Universities" in Hunan Province. Since 2020, the university has been transferred to the first batch of undergraduate universities in Hunan Province, and in 2021 it was approved to be a awarding unit for master's degree.
The university has an existing campus area of 1,415 mu (943,333 square meters) and a building area of 592,500 square meters. It has fixed assets of 1.523 billion yuan. There are more than 2.8 million paper books and more than 4 million electronic books. There are 1,743 faculty members, including 141 with full and senior professional titles and 400 with doctoral degrees. There are 138 high-level talents at the national level and above the provincial level, such as members of the undergraduate teaching Committee of the Ministry of Education, outstanding talents in the new century and special allowance experts of the State Council. The proportion of "double-qualified" teachers is 54%. The university has 14 colleges and 58 undergraduate majors, focusing on engineering, covering science, literature, management, teaching, art, economics and other disciplines. The university enrolls students from 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, and presently it has more than 25,000 full-time undergraduate and graduate students.
The university adheres to moral education, attaches importance to education and teaching reform, promotes university-enterprise cooperation, integration of production and education, and innovates talent training mode. With the goal of cultivating high-quality applied talents, the "1234" applied talents training system was constructed. That is, taking the cultivation of students' ability as the main line, ideological and political education and innovation and entrepreneurship education run through the whole process of talent cultivation, and through the three major curriculum modules of basic ability course, professional ability course and development ability course, the cultivation requirements of "solid foundation, emphasis on application, characteristics and high quality" are achieved. In cooperation with enterprises, we have established Ai Hua College, Aoshikang Class, Order Class of No.23 Metallurgical Company of Minmetals, Yuanda Housing Engineering, Broad Homes College etc., and adopted "3+1" or "3+0.5+0.5" and other personnel training mode reforms between the university and enterprises to comprehensively improve the quality of personnel training.
The university adheres to the position of talent training center and has trained a large number of advanced applied talents for the society. The employment rate of university graduates has exceeded 95% for 15 consecutive years. In recent years, the salary ranking of college graduates in Hunan Province has been ranked first among provincial undergraduate colleges and universities, and it has been rated as "National University with Typical Experience in Graduates' Employment"and "Hunan Employment and Entrepreneurship Demonstration University". The university is known as the "cradle of urban construction talents", and outstanding graduates have participated in the construction of national key projects such as the National Stadium (Bird's Nest), Qinshan Nuclear Power Station, Shanghai-Kunming High-speed Railway and Hangzhou Bay Bridge.
Based on the industry and serving the region, the university constantly optimizes the professional structure and strengthens the construction of professional connotation. Urban & Rural Planning is a national characteristic major and a national comprehensive reform pilot major. Four majors, such as urban & rural planning, electronic information engineering, civil engineering and engineering management, have been recognized as national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites; 29 majors, such as landscape architecture, mechanical design and manufacturing and its automation, and physical education, have been recognized as the first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites in Hunan Province. The university cooperated with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and Yiyang Municipal People's Government to build Hunan New Smart City Research Institute, and cooperated with Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and Aihua Group to build Modern Industrial College. It has 40 practical teaching and innovation and entrepreneurship education platforms at or above the provincial level, represented by the national experimental teaching demonstration center of civil engineering, and has won 153 collaborative education projects by the Ministry of Education. The university has won 3 national teaching achievement awards and 36 provincial teaching achievement awards.
The university insists on the combination of Industry-University-Research-Application. It has six "double first-class" applied disciplines in Hunan Province, including civil engineering, urban & rural planning, and information and communication engineering. It has 43 scientific research and innovation platforms at or above the provincial level, such as national Makerspace and digital urban and rural spatial planning, Hunan key laboratory of dark tea and golden flower, Hunan urban and rural ecological planning and restoration engineering technology research center, Hunan new urbanization research institute, Hunan Socialism with Chinese characteristics theoretical system research center and postdoctoral research mobile station collaborative research and development center. In recent years, it has won 60 national projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation and the National Social Science Foundation. It has also got 24 national and provincial science and technology awards and outstanding achievement awards of social science fund projects. Planning and architectural design achievements have won more than 150 industry awards above the provincial level, including 14 national awards. It is the unit with the highest award level and the most awards in the field of planning and design of colleges and universities in the province. The Classification Standard of Town (Village) Green Space, which was formulated by the university, was approved by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development as the national industry standard, and the strategic plan for the spatial development of Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan ecological green heart area has won the first place in the international bidding. It led the establishment of the Hunan Urban Science Research Association, a provincial society, and the Hunan New Urbanization Research Institute was selected as a professional think tank in Hunan Province. City Journal was awarded the title of "Top 100 Social Sciences Journals of National Universities", "Excellent Social Sciences Journals of National Universities" and "Core Journals of China Humanities and Social Sciences Journals".
Sticking to the opening-up policy, the university has made great achievements in the international cooperation and exchange. It has cooperated closely with universities from Singapore, Australia, Ghana, New Zealand, Malaysia, the United States, Macau and other countries and regions. It has won the title "Malaysia Higher Education Annual Quality Cooperative University". The evaluation of undergraduate education project of visual communication design in cooperation with Vitoria Institute of Technology in New Zealand was unanimously approved. The Confucius Institute, co-organized with the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, is the first of its kind in the province.
The university has two university-run enterprises, Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd of Hunan City University and Testing Center Co., Ltd. Of Hunan City University, with a total output value of over 200 million yuan in 2023. The Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. has 10 A-level engineering design qualifications such as urban and rural planning, construction engineering and municipal roads, and is a "national high-tech enterprise". The university has signed Industry-University-Research cooperation agreements and internship base agreements with more than 400 well-known companies such as China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), China Construction Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (CSCEC) and China Railway Engineering Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway). Jointly established the first "Rural Revitalization Planning Institute" in the province with Nanxian People's Government.
In 2021, the fourth party congress of the university planned a new blueprint for the development of the university and determined the "12345" developing strategy. That is, to make clear ONE developing idea: the future development of the university should adhere to the idea of "party building leading, strengthening the foundation and developing with high quality"; to stimulate TWO driving forces for development: creative reforming and continuous striving; to consolidate THREE development foundations: foundation for first-batch university, foundation for "double-first-class" university and foundation for master's degree authorization unit; to change FOUR development concepts: realize the transformation from university scale expansion to connotation promotion, from teaching to teaching research, from teaching-centered to learning-centered, from traditional management to modern governance; to build FIVE new HNCU: new excellent HNCU, new innovative HNCU, new efficient HNCU, new smart HNCU and new happy HNCU.
